Frequently Asked Questions:
- Why should I come to the MathZoom Summer Camp 2008?
The MathZoom Summer Camp offers an opportunity for bright and mathematically
gifted students to expand their mathematical horizon, improve problem solving skills,
and explore areas in advanced mathematics.
The Academic Curriculum is geared to prepare students for mathematical contests
such as AMC, AIME, USAMO, and IMO. Students gain greater interest in Math, better
skills in problem solving, and more confidence in facing academic challenges.
With an outstanding performance in one or more of these contests, students will gain
considerable recognitions in their college applications.
Communication and Leadership Development: The setup of the programs encourages
student participation, helps improve communication and leadership skills. Students
are trained to become not only smarter problem solvers, but also better communicators.
Confidence sparkles when students talk about the things they are really interested,
with the peers who share the same interest. With the guidance of the experienced coaches,
students learn how to effectively articulate their thinking processes. Students are trained
to become better leaders and communicators in the field they are good at.
The Evening Seminars focus on introduction to advanced mathematics topics, preview
of college majors and professional careers that require strong mathematical foundation.
Overall, this program is for future leaders in all math related fields.
- Who are the faculty?
The faculty consist of renowned lecturers, veterans in International
Mathematical Olympiads (IMO) and Olympiad coaches, who have successful careers in math,
science, and technology, with many years of classroom teaching experiences. Among them
are: Dr. Feng Wang, founder of MathZoom, member of the very first Chinese national team
for IMO, former math faculty at UC Irvine and UCLA. Dr. Harold B. Reiter, a Professor
of Mathematics at UNCC. He chaired the American Mathematics Competitions AHSME Committee
from 1993 to 2000. He has been the state director of the AMC for North Carolina since 1979.
He currently serves on the College Board’s College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Pre
Calculus Mathematics Committee; chairs the MAA’s Edith May Sliffe Award Committee. He is a
former chair and member of the MATHCOUNTS Question Writing Committee; former member of
AIME and USAMO committees, former chair of SAT II Test Development Committee with ETS;
Numerous other awards, honors, and publications. Dr. Zuming Feng, the current Head
Coach of the USA national team for IMO, distinguished math teacher at Phillips Exeter
Academy. We are in the process to invite and confirm with the faculty for 2008.
Please visit the faculty page for more
information and constant update to the list of other faculty members.
- What is the academic curriculum?
The camp curriculum will cover some or all of the following topics: Modular arithmetic,
Numbers and their digits & divisors, Basic and advanced counting strategies, Combinatorics,
Polynomials and their coefficients & zeros, Algebraic inequalities and other techniques,
Special angles and regular polygons, Centers of triangles, Collinearity and concurrency,
Trigonometry, Vector and Coordinates. Various problem solving techniques will be introduced,
as well as Math contest strategies.
- What materials and study tools should I bring?
Teaching materials - books, hand-outs, and paper - will be provided
to the students. Students should bring their own pens, pencils, rulers,
compasses, calculators, etc.
- What is the age range of the participating students, and how are they grouped?
Students between ages of 12 and 17 are encouraged to apply. We may accept students
who are under age 12 only if they show remarkable mathematical and personal maturity. Students will be
placed into groups based on their goals and current levels. Initial placement is based on the
application materials. The placement can be adjusted during the program.
- Where and when will the MathZoom Summer Camp be held?
The MathZoom Summer Camp will be held at University of California,
Los Angeles, from July 13, 2007 through August 2, 2008.
This is a weekday overnight camp. The programs during the week will be intensive.
Students have the option to go home on weekends to relax and spend time with their
families and/or relatives, or stay on campus with our camp counselors for fun and relaxing activities.
There is an additional fee for weekend stay.
- How much does the MathZoom Summer Camp cost?
The application fee is $50. You have the option to attend three weeks, two weeks,
or one week. See below table for Tuition. Tuition includes all lessons, seminars, activities,
transportation from and to the airport, room and board. Math Zoom students who completed at least
one course receive $100 off if registering for two or three weeks.
There is an additional $400 fee for staying on campus during the two weekends. There are day campers packages
(no overnight or weekend stay) available as well. The following table contains the
detailed fee schedule.
As a Two-week Camper, you may choose to participate in the first two weeks, or the last two weeks.
There is an extra $200 fee for staying during the weekend in between.
One-week Campers can choose to attend any one of the three weeks.
The first and second weeks will focus on the following topics: Algebra, Geometry,
Number Theory, Combinatorics, and Trigonometry. The focus of the third week is the training
on general problem solving strategies. All three weeks have lectures and problem solving
sessions.

- What is the procedure and deadline to apply for MathZoom Summer Camp 2008?
To simplify the application process, we identified a group of students who automatically
qualify. Please see the Application Information page for more details. For others applicants,
the application is a two-step process. Fill and submit application form with payment,
and take admission test. The application forms and payments postmarked must meet three deadlines
to take advantage of the discounted rates. Please see the Application Information page for details.
To help families to make their summer planning easier, we also implemented an ongoing application
processing procedure. With this procedure, we process applications in the order they come in.
Usually admission notification is given within two weeks of receipt of completed application materials.
- Where should I send the application materials?
The application form, tuition check or money order, and the admission test should be
mailed to:
MathZoom Summer Camp
2913 EL CAMINO REAL, #804
Tustin, CA 92782
Alternatively, the application form and admission test can also be sent via email to:
mathcamp@mathzoom.org. The
tuition payment must be sent by regular mail.
- What is your refund policy?
The $50 application fee is not refundable. If you are not accepted based on the
application materials, the tuition will be refunded in full. If you request to cancel
enrollment three weeks prior to the program starts, the full amount of the tuition,
minus $150 administrative fee, will be refunded. Cancellation request made within
three weeks prior to the start, 50% of the tuition will be refunded. No refund is
available after the program starts. Exceptions can be made for special situations
(e.g. medical reasons) on a case by case basis at Math Zoom's discretion.
